KIVALINA CITY FORMS FIRST EVER SOFTBALL TEAMS!
The Kivalina City administrator Janet Mitchell received an email in July from the Tribal Office with info stating that Maniilaq would cover expenses for two teams from the age group 8-15 years old. Administrator Mitchell jumped at the opportunity for the children and formed two teams. Volunteer coaches Bruce Ray Adams, Charla Swan and Tina Swan offered their services to bring the teams to Kotzebue with Janet Mitchell. The Kivalina Minor League took the sportmanship award. All children had a ball at the tournament with only one being sent home for violation of rules of conduct, one sent home because of illness and one sustained an injury during a game. All the children behaved tremendously well compared to a few other teams. No other violations occured during our stay at Kotzebue.

32 HAWLEY WHALING CREW went out to the ice April 19.
Ray Abner Hawley led the crew out to the ocean to wait for whales out on the ice. He had five (6) other machines trailing behind the whaling boat as they made their way along the beach North towards the open water. Our prayers and wishes for success to the crew.
On April 7, all whaling equipment were blessed at the Episcopal Church, which is a tradition exercised by the people of Kivalina. All whaling captains with their wives are asked to approach the altar to receive blessings as well for safety and success.
